This work depicts Emmeline Pankhurst, the leading British women's rights activist, who led the movement to win the right for women to vote. She helped found the Women's Social and Political Union that gained notoriety for its activities and whose members were the first to be called 'suffragettes'. In her fight for a vote, was arrested on numerous occasions and went on hunger strike herself, resulting in violent force-feeding. Women were granted equal voting rights with men shortly after her death in 1928. House of Cards is our series depicting the courageous and powerful women throughout history who shaped the world.
